2016) Bait schools have been plentiful. Snook are still firing off on the chummed bait, with big Redfish mixed in. Grouper trolling has been effective for catching a good size family dinner.
2013)This past weeks tides provided for some exciting fish catching rallies and some nice fillets for dinner. The redfish, speckled trout ,and flounder have been very active and are feeding on live shiners. Snook have been moving slowly off the beach and migrating back to the bushes.Look for the snook bite to explode as the fall season comes into its sweet spot.
The Fall season offers some of the best fishing opportunities available on our waters. Look for the fishing frenzy to stay strong until the 1 cold front comes thru in December.Until next time keep the slack out of your line.
2011)With the drop in water temperatures from the 80's into the 70's ,the Fall fishing pattern has come on strong like a category 4 hurricane. Fishing out of Anna Maria island the past week has been nothing short of fantastic with redfish taking the center stage. Schools of redfish are roaming all over the flats and edges of Tampa bay from the Skyway bridge all the way down past Sarasota's Long Bar. Shiners ,pinfish and cut ladyfish have been the bait of choice for the copper belly bruisers. . Lamar Stokes of Tampa fished 2 days last week in the evenings with me and had non stop action for over 3 hours each evening.
Off the beach and near shore reefs the action has heated up with Spanish mackerel ,kingfish, tarpon , and sharks all feeding heavily on the passing schools of bait. Hammerhead, blacktips and spinner sharks were chewing heavily last week off the 1 mile artificial reef. The sharks provide for some epic battles with strong drag pulling runs and aerial acrobatics that rival tarpon. All sharks were released to bite another day .
2010) Once again the October weather has rolled around and turned postcard perfect . Mid 80f in the daytime low humidity and the Fall Pattern has busted wide open. Speckled trout , Redfish, Mackeral, Kingfish etc are turning on. I have even been jumping tarpon off the beach. Bait is thick in the Anna Maria area and will Supercharge the fishing . 2009)This is one of the best times of the year to fish around Anna Maria .In the last week my Charters have averaged 30 Redfish a trip with snook and MANY Trout mixed in.The weather has still been Summer like( HOT) but the fish are in a fall Pattern. Kingfish and Cobia are off the beaches and Grouper are in the Bay . We got 3 nice keeper Grouper in about and hour of trolling with the Duvall family . 2008) was one of the best months yet as Snook ,Trout ,Redfish,Kingfish ,Spanish Mackeral,Sharks ,and Cobia were chewing hard . Oct. has seen the Pattern change from the SummerPattern to the Fall Pattern. Grouper have come on Strong with many keepers being landed while trolling inshore and near shore. The fish are moving into canals and deep-water trying to stay warm. Capt Mark
2016) My boat is getting refurbished. Follow me on Facebook to see the progress!
2015) A variety of sharks between 2 feet and 6 feet long, have been caught lately. We have been hooking up to 20 per trip! Redfish and snook have started to make their way to their wintertime hangouts. Kingfish, Mackerel and Grouper have been available and bait has been plentiful. The weather has been postcard perfect!
2013)Fishing the past few weeks out of Island Discount Tackle around Anna Maria island has been as good as it gets.Snook and redfish have been tearing up the flats and chewing with reckless abandon as they prepare for the winter season to arrive.
Redfish are still schooling on the flats in huge schools and tearing up the pods of shiners that are making their transition from inside upper Tampa bay .2 hour rallies of drag screaming ,tackle busting action has been the norm on my recent charters. The fish have been a variety of sizes from 15inch dinks to over slot bruisers . Catching a upper slot fish for the dinner table has been easy . Snook are also on the flats and in the bushes.
Snook have moved off the beach and are making their way slowly to their Winter haunts . Look along mangroves and potholes to locate the silver sided predators .
Looking forward the fall fishing pattern will continue to be hot as long as mother nature continues to give us an Indian summer and keeps the warm temperatures around our area waters.
2012)In spite of the tropical storm Sandy throwing a monkey wrench in our normal weather patterns ,this past weeks fishing around the fertile waters of Anna Maria Island has been exceptional with some long rallies of ravenous schools of redfish, snook and trout chewing on shiners and bending rods.
Redfish schools are all over the flats cruising in the shallow waters. My patrons were able to enjoy frenzied redfish action with multiple hookups of mixed sized reds ,snook ,and speckled trout .Upper slot redfish were harvested to provide for some fillets for the dinner table. . Snook and speckled trout have been mixed in with the redfish. Look for the cruising mullet schools to get an idea of where the fish are traveling . Find a nice pothole on the flat ,anchor up current ,chum and let your bait offerings sweep into the hole.Thumb sized pinfish and shiners ,rigged under a popping cork will draw all 3 species to the party. Cut pieces of mullet, pinfish,or ladyfish will also draw strikes .
Looking forward the Fall fishing pattern is yielding some incredible fish catching opportunities .The flats will continue to produce and the Gulf waters will clear up and turn on this week. Moderate temperatures and Easterly winds will calm the waters and make for some beautiful days on the water.
Keep the slack out of your line and feel the game fish inhale your bait.
2011) Fishing out of Anna Maria Island on my 23ft Hydra sport Baybolt this past week ,my charters had some of the best action of the year landing redfish on almost every cast. The redfish were chewing hard on live shrimp .One client from Canada went thru 6 dozen shrimp in a 4 hour period landing a mix of redfish , speckled trout , sheephead, black drum, and ladyfish. Fish the deepwater docks where the pilings have a lot of oyster build up and barnacles. All the redfish that are being caught this Winter bodes well for a excellent Spring time redfish bite.
Looking forward the tides will be good for the week as the full moon approaches .Moving water is key to angling success, and the moon phase is a catalyst for tidal movement .Try and match the solunar periods for fish catching optimization.
2010) The past week was one of best weeks for fishing in the County Waters. On a scout trip with my sister ,Cindy McClure ,we netted bait in 2 throws with both live wells filled to the brim with a nice mix of shiners and thread fins .We then proceeded to troll for grouper around the hard bottom areas of Tampa Bay. In a little over an hours time we were able to catch 10 grouper with 4 being legal size and ready for the grill. The color of the day was a gold Bomber Long A Magnum with a broken back rigged on the appropriate planner. We literally left the fish biting.
Switching gears we moved up to the flats for some spectacular catch and release speckled trout fishing with a few going over 20". As the tide continued to rise we moved to the potholes and mangroves and chummed with shiners . The redfish bite turned on and Cindy landed a nice redfish in the 30" club. Do not forget to use the dead shiners in your live well as chum because the predators of the flats will be drawn to the smell of the bait.
2016) My boat is being refurbished. Follow me on Facebook to see the progress!
2015) We had very moderate temperatures. The nearshore Grouper and Snapper bite has been excellent with non-stop action on the calm water days. Troup, Redfish and Ladyfish have been biting inshore.
2013)On my recent charters we have been concentrating on fishing deep water docks resulting in some excellent catches of redfish and sheep head.On the deep water flats the speckled trout have been biting on a either a soft plastic or live shrimp rigged on a 1/4oz jig under a popping cork set to just above the grass line . Pompano and flounder have been also hitting this setup for a nice change of pace.
Looking forward the low winter tides in the morning hours will provide for some excellent fishing opportunities as the fish will be trapped in the low water potholes. Look for the deep holes on the edges of flats to find the fish staging areas and you will be rewarded with non stop action and some tasty fillets for the dinner table. Until next week keep the slack out of your line to feel the thump of the predator inhaling your bait.
2012)Fishing this past week out of beautiful Anna Maria Island on my 23ft Hydra sport bay boat, the Winter time fishing pattern is in full effect and the Winter time species are biting.Redfish ,black drum, and sheephead have been feeding under the deep water docks . The bait of choice was select live shrimp or 2 small ones rigged tandem on the hook with a split shot IE a lot of meat and smell on the hook.
The extra low tides will also provide excellent opportunities to wade fish for redfish and speckled trout. On the extreme low tides , wade to the potholes on the flats surrounded with exposed sea grass. Using artificial baits or live shrimp ,slowly work your rig thru the pothole for fishing in a barrel action.Redfish will stage in these shallow potholes .
Looking forward as the Winter pattern continues to dominate our fishing ,sheephead fishing will only get better as the winter time pattern advances . Remember speckled trout fishing season is open this year .Fishing in deep water along drop offs with a Berkley Gulp or a live shrimp rigged with a split shot will get some filets for the table.
2010)With the past weeks weather staying Fall like ,the fishing was red hot with many species landed on my charters.Shiners are still around in the bay and at the Skyway piers.I have not made the switch to live shrimp but will very soon.
Anchoring up over the near shore artificial reefs and chumming with shiners, cut bait ,or using chum blocks helps to draw the fish to the back of your boat and fires up the bite. Catches of grouper ,mackerel, bonito and huge flounder have been the result of using this technique .We caught doormat sized flounder to 24" in the sand just off of the reef structure . A live shiner, pinfish ,threadfin, or shrimp rigged on a 2/0 hook with a split shot weight was the rig for catching these tasty white meat fillets.
Looking forward the tides will be favorable for fishing and the weather looks to stay moderate. We should be able to enjoy the fall pattern until the real cold fronts come our way.
