2016) Tarpon are on the beach and in the passes! The speckled trout action has been very good this month. Trout up to 27 inches have been landed. The Redfish bite has been good with dock fishing being the most productive method. Snook have been spawning on the beach, and the passes are heavy with the linesiders for good catch and release action.
2014) Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle at Keyes marina on Anna Maria island has been a produced some red hot action and a nice variety of fish coming to the dinner table . The key to success has been to accept the blazing heat mother nature has presented to us and adjust your fishing techniques.
Shiners have recently spawned and so there is a lot of small "hatch bait"in the bay . I am down sizing my hooks from a 2/0 Owner down a size 1 hook. Put 2 small shiners on a hook for a more appealing bait. Don't forget to use small pinfish too.
Redfish are forming in schools and can provide for some rod bending action and nice fillets for the dinner table. I have been finding the reds in deeper water,3-8ft.
Mangrove snappers are everywhere and feeding heavily on the hatch baits and small shiners. Find deeper structure and chum with the hatch bait that dies in your live well. Limits have been easy. Look for the snapper bite to only get batter as we progress in the Summer season.
Looking forward the New moon this weekend will provide for some big tidal movements and great opportunities for some excellent rod bending drag screaming action. until next time, keep the slack out of your line and learn to feel the thump of the predator inhaling your bait.
2012) This past week fishing out of Anna Maria Island on my 23ft Hydraport , the inshore bite was excellent during the moving water phases. Redfish have been very active in the potholes along mangrove shorelines. Using a popping cork with a live shiner or pinfish tossed into the shade of the mangroves has resulted in some excellent catches of these copper belly bruisers. Conner Girardi and family of Anna Maria fished Saturday morning and had a banner day of catching redfish, snook and trout . The family was able to take a nice bag of fillets home for the grill . Snook are active around the passes with some explosive action in just a few feet of water right against the beach shoreline . They are also gathering in big schools around mangrove shorelines for the upcoming full moon spawn.
Shiners have recently spawned and so there is a lot of small sized fry in the bay . I am down sizing my hooks from a 2/0 Owner down to a 1/0 or even a size 1 hook. Put 2 small shiners on a hook for a more appealing bait. Do not forget to try dead bait now as the water temperature heats up and the fish get lazy .
Looking forward the tides next week will be high mid day with a huge drop in the evening. The resulting moving water will trigger some excellent fishing action .
2011) The Summer time pattern is in full swing and the action has been good on my recent charters fishing out of Anna Maria Island. High temperatures and humid weather have made fishing early in the morning and late in the afternoon the more comfortable and productive option for the inshore waters when targeting snook , redfish and speckled trout . Look for the redfish and snook to be up in the shade of the mangroves on a high tide and in the deep potholes during the low tide. Speckled trout have been scattered with catches coming in 4-6ft of water . Some big sized gators are being landed on some of the past weeks trips.
Shark fishing continues to be a excellent option as a lot of sharks have moved into the bay and off the beaches. Pound for pound ,sharks are some of the hardest fighting adversaries on the water. Caution and care must be used to release these apex predators unharmed after a battle . Check the fishing regulations closely as to what sharks are available for harvest.
Looking forward, the moderate tides next week will play an important part of your fish catching success. Plan on being in your spot when the tidal flow is moving to increase your chances of fish catching success
2010) The fishing around Anna Maria has been good with a variety of fish chewing. Speckled trout have moved into deeper grass areas. Redfish are cruising the mangroves during the high tide periods . My charters this week hooked into some nice Blacktips and Lemon sharks using cut ladyfish and Spanish mackeral. Because there was a recent hatch of bait during the last full moon, I have down sized my hooks and leaders to accomadate the small baits. I am also using small pinfish due to the ease of netting them.
A 85lb Cobia
2016) Sharks have been the fish of opportunity this month. Blacktips, bulls and lemons from 30 to 150 pounds have been caught. The redfish and mangrove snapper have been schooling and the chewing is good.
2014) Fishing out of Island Discount Tackle on beautiful Anna Maria island on my 23ft tower boat, the fishing this past week has been typical of the summer time fishing pattern. Mangrove snapper ,Redfish ,speckled trout ,and flounder have been coming to the party and providing some nice tasty fillets for my client's dinner table.
The bait game is getting better as the shiner hatch from early June is getting some size 3". Do not over load or crowd your live wells due to the high water temperature in Tampa Bay.
Mangrove snapper are coming off the full moon spawn and feeding around docks, piers ,artificial reefs and bridges. The key to catching them is to fire up the bite by chumming a mix of live and dead shiners in your live well .Small pinfish also work just fine as bait. I like to use a 25lb fluorocarbon leader and a size 1 hook rigged with a split shot weight. The key to success is to get the rig up close to the structure where the snapper are staging . Getting your 5 /person limit has been relatively easy the last few weeks.
Speckled trout are in a feeding frenzy and are finally getting some size to them. On my charters we have been catching a variety of different sized trout .On the smaller speckled trout, I like to use a dehooker so you do not handle these delicate fish and remove the slime coat . The majority of trout have been caught in deepwater grass beds 4-8ft and are hitting shiners.
Redfish are slowly gathering in schools and feeding on the moving tides. I have been following the schools of reds up the flats as the current moves toward high tide. The redfish bite will soon turn on as the fish begin to gather in huge schools in anticipation of the Fall migration.
Looking forward the Summer time fishing pattern is hitting on all cylinders and those who are able to adjust and adapt their fishing techniques should be rewarded with some red hot action.
2013) With the heat of the Summer upon us , I have had to change my game plan up to be successful . The high water temperatures 85f+ on the flats have forced the fish out of the skinny water and into their deeper water haunts. Speckled trout are feeding in 3-8ft of water and will chew a variety of baits presented.I like to fish the deep grass areas of Tampa bay and the intercostal waterway .Locate the schools of slot fish and you should have no trouble getting your limit.
Redfish will start forming into big schools and feed aggressively on the moving current. I have been finding reds on the fastest part of the moving tide. Using pinfish for bait has produced some nice slot sized fish.
Sharks are very thick in the bay right now .They are varying in sizes from 3-5 ft blacktips to 8-10ft bull sharks . Fish around Egmont Key or the Skyway with a big chunk of oily fish and put out a chum block and the bulls should be feeding in no time. Upsize your tackle as some have been in the 300pd range and have made short work of my Tarpon poles . Breaking out the broom sticks and the 275pd cable will do the trick. Use caution as they are the apex predators of Tampa Bay .
2012) The fishing out of the beautiful majestic Anna Maria Island on my 23ft Tower boat has been action packed ,productive , and resulted in some excellent catches of speckled trout,,snook, and redfish .
With the summer time pattern in full effect ,speckled trout this week were feeding with much vigor and chewing on shiners .My charters landed some speckled trout measuring up to 27 inches. On a recent charter the Anderson clan from Kentucky had some exciting action with daughter Katelyn taking the high hook with a 27inch speckled trout in the box beating her brother Cameron with small 26inch beauty. . In the Summer time ,the speckled trout school up according to size .Move on to a new spot when catching the small ones. Redfish were more scattered but still provided some excellent fishing action. The redfish are roaming flats in smaller schools feeding on the moving tides. Snook have been active with some nice fish feeding . Look for the snook up in the bushes on a high tide and following the tide off the flats as it goes out.
Shiners have been easy with many of the traditional baits spots holding some beautiful sized baits . Use caution in overloading your live wells as the Summer heat will stress your bait resulting in a loss of baits. Look for the bait game to only improve as the hatch from June grows to preferable 3-4 inch size.
Looking forward the tides will give us a low tide in the morning hours prompting me to fish in the potholes and edges and away from the mangroves. Some excellent opportunities will present themselves with the low water periods.
2011) This past week fishing out of Anna Maria Island on my 23ft Hydraport , the weather has been a major factor affecting our fishing success. Overcast skies has made sight fishing tough for tarpon . Though still off the beach , the number of tarpon schools have been dwindling. Big sized shiners and thread fins have been the ticket to our success fighting these huge Silver Kings.
Sharks have made a huge showing around Anna Maria and Tampa Bay. On a recent charter ,I pulled up to a grass edge and slowly swimming in 2ft of water was a 6ft Black tip shark. Its tail and dorsal fin were slicing thru the water like a hot butter knife. The key to catching these hard fighters is to use chum blocks and lots of chum shiners . A bloody mackerel or ladyfish will get these toothy animals to bite.
Redfish have started to feed heavily around the mangrove shorelines during the incoming tide. Live shiners and pinfish will entice these hard fighting bruisers to bite.
Use a bobber to keep your bait from swimming into the grass.
2010) The fishing around Anna Maria is picking up with many species starting to school up and chew. On the artifical reefs, the bite is hot with mangrove snapper to 3lbs being caught. Spanish mackerel are also in the mix. The key is to use chum blocks and a mix of live and dead shiners to fire up the bite. Downsize your tackle with 20lb florocarbon leaders and 1/0 hooks to fool these tasty fish.
A Keeper Snook
2016) I have been targeting redifsh and trout this month. The redfish are moving to the flats and potholes and forming some nice schools to catch. The trout have been chewing with trout up to 18 inches and some big ones being landed occasionally. Snook are moving off the beaches and going to the mangroves and flats. PS - NO HURRICANES!
2013)Fishing this past week out of Island Discount tackle on Anna Maria island has signaled the start of the Summer Fall transition with exciting fishing action happening in our area waters. Huge schools of bait invading our inshore waters are supercharging the inshore bite with the redfish ,speckled trout ,mangrove snapper, and snook taking center stage .
The redfish are feeding heavily on shiners and pinfish .We start fishing on the outside bars at low tide and follow the water current and predators up into the bushes. This can provide for some extended rallies and plenty of fillets for the dinner table .
Mangrove snapper are abundant and chewing heavily around the Anna Maria area. From the docks of the ICW to the artificial reefs inside Tampa bay, find some structure and it should be holding some of these fine tasting fillets. Live shrimp, shiners, and pinfish rigged on a #2 hook with 20lb fluorocarbon leader will trick these sharp eyed predators to come to the party .
Looking forward ,with the full moon on Sept 19 ,the tides and current will pick up and the fishing action will shift to overdrive .The Summer/Fall transition, the big swing in tides and fast moving current flow will factor in a golden opportunity to have some of the best fishing opportunities of the year.
2011) The bite has been above average with the redfish invading ours waters in masses. Schools of redfish are all over the flats tailing in the shallow water at low tide and moving up into the mangroves at high tide. .Look for the red tails in the air and place a bait in their path and you will be rewarded with a drag screaming hook up. The reds have been mixed in size from rat reds to over slot bruisers.Look for the red fishing to stay red hot on the flats until the Winter time .
The bait game has dramatically improved with the flats loaded with all sizes and the fish gorging themselves. All the regular spots, Key Royale , the Bulkhead , Terra Ciea #9 ,the edges of the Intercostals etc will be holding greenbacks .Use Purina Tropical Fish food to chum them to the boat. When chumming for the shiners, wait 10 minutes before you throw your net to give the shiners time to ball up around your boat .The wait will ensure the schools of bait will be thick in your chum slick.
Look for the pelicans diving in the water on the bait schools to give you an idea of where to fish. Predators will be slashing thru the schools hitting feverishly preparing for the Fall.
In the fishing calendar we are at the very early stages of the Summer/ Fall transition. Now is the time to get your fishing gear in tip top condition for the Fall fishing run . Look for more fishing opportunities and more varieties of fish moving into our waters to put a test to fishing skills .
2010) The Summer to Fall transisition has begun. The water temperature is averaging 83f ,a drop from 89f a few weeks ago .Look for the water temperature to trend downward which is fantastic for fishing. The bait schools are thick in Tampa bay and off the beaches. These actions are causing the fishing in the Anna Maria area to really turn on.
On Thursday 16 Sept. , fishing with Dustin Thomas and Cindy McClure , we caught a variety of fish off the beach . Black tip sharks, lemon sharks ,big spanish mackerel , bluefish, and even a 80lb Tarpon. The fishing off the beaches of Anna Maria is starting to get heated up.
Speckled trout and redfish are feeding heavily on all the shiner schools in our area. I have been catching beautiful speckled trout and nice mixed sized redfish from Miguel bay down to the Long bar in Sarasota. Set up in 2 to 8ft of water and chum with shiners to get the action going.
This next week will have a big swing of the tides which are a key factor in a successful fishing trip . Let the fall patterns begin!!
